About This Spot

Stepping into Brancusi on Micklegate feels like finding a quietly confident gem tucked within the rhythm of York’s city centre. The mood is calm yet welcoming, a place where the pace slows just enough to make space for thoughtful conversation and genuine connection. Sunlight filters softly through the windows, casting a gentle warmth across simple, inviting interiors that balance comfort with subtle sophistication.

Here, the food unfolds as an extension of that atmosphere — familiar but with little surprises that keep each visit engaging. The kitchen leans into seasonal, thoughtfully sourced ingredients, crafting plates that linger in memory more for their harmony and detail than loud showmanship. Whether it’s the nuanced spicing of a shakshuka, the earthy richness of mushrooms paired with creamy cheese, or a perfectly executed full English breakfast, each dish carries an unspoken care that makes you pause, savor, and enjoy without rush.

Brancusi is the kind of spot that effortlessly suits different rhythms of the day: languid weekend brunches with a carefully mixed Bloody Mary in hand, quiet lunches where a crisp glass of white wine complements a seasonal special, or casual evening suppers that invite reflection over dishes both comforting and curious. The service mirrors the setting — attentive without crowding, sincere with a relaxed charm.

There’s a subtle joy in discovering the layers within the menu — a pairing of flavors that might surprise, or the softness of freshly baked pastries that feel like a small indulgence. It’s a place where vegan, vegetarian, and meat-eaters alike can find unexpected delights without pretense. Brancusi isn’t loud or flashy; it’s quietly assured, a space where you feel a little more at ease, a little more human.

Went there for the first time though this is my second visit to York. I ordered Persian egg and it was flavourful. My wife had a scallop and bacon roll, though I would call it a bun. This is my first experience to taste the combination of bacon and scallop, and the bacon is slightly overpowered the scallop taste. But with three scallops, I think it is a very good deal. My friend ordered a fried trout. The presentation was good, but I did not have the chance to taste it. The staff there is very friendly and helpful.

Delicious selections. Party of three, vegan, vegetarian, and eat everything. Something delicious for all. Classic European menu done to perfection. Excellent service. Very pleasant and cozy surroundings.

Came here for brunch while in York for the weekend and was blown away! My partner and I both got the full English and loved them – the quality of the ingredients was amazing, not a duff thing on the plate. Black pudding in particular was fantastic. We also both had a Bloody Mary and, as someone who is very fussy about a Bloody Mary, I had no complaints! The service is the other thing to mention here. The team were so attentive, helpful and friendly and really efficient with service. They all seemed really happy to be there too, which makes all the difference. The atmosphere of the restaurant was lovely and welcoming too, just really relaxed and stylish. Couldn’t recommend it more. Fantastic value for the quality of the food and the exceptional service too!

Excellent flat white. Sensational shakshuka - good spicing balanced the sweetness of the tomatoes and peppers beautifully. Sadly I was defeated 2/3 in. Loose pants recommended!

A few real show stopping dishes We stopped here for supper as walk-ins while strolling through York city centre without really expecting much and were surprised in the best way possible. The final bill ended up being quite steep, but everything was at least "very good" and I would say worth the money. Negroni, 9/10, fruity and zesty, intense negroni flavour that I love, and full marks for using the right type of ice. Great start to the meal. Grilled octopus, 10/10, perfectly tender grilled meat was excellent, and the sauce underneath it was absolutely delicious, I think I actually liked it more than the meat! Almost had me licking the plate clean! Cod and beans, 7/10, a bit of a low note, and the main course I ordered (sad trombone noises...) it was well prepared and a lovely bit of fish, but for me just lacked a bit of something. Crab parpadelle, 8/10, my wife's choice and apparently "not bad" which is high praise by her standards. Chocolate crema, 9/10, absolutely delicious creamy chocolate dessert. The pistachios were the best part, being candied but having a surprising soft texture.

Amazing experience. Basically every thing on the menu has above average quality. The English breakfast is unlike any other restaurant i have been. Bean seems like homemade appreciate that less sweet not my type. But the black pudding is the crispiest i had have. And the other elements are delicious too. The most recommended would be pastry. The Basque cheese is very balanced, not extremely sweet and the silliness is enjoyable. Lemon pistachios cake very strong lemon flavour yet i don’t feel like they added some artificial additives. However, it won’t remind me of the pistachios part if not they put them on top. All other pastries are recommended. Coffee on the other hand is plain in a sense that all other items are so good. Wine recommended Staff are really nice and professional

First time visiting, I will absolutely be returning! Staff were so friendly, attentive and warm The pace of service was great! And the food was super delicious! I’ve visited a lot of places and it’s hard to find all three, so thank you, the Brancusi Team, for all ur hard work! Thankfully we had booked, I do recommend booking, as it was super busy when we went in (understandable as to why!)
